Students Suffer Burn Injuries in Pennsylvania

Posted on November 29th, 2012 No Comments

Middle school students were injured in Pennsylvania after a chemical fire started in a science classroom. Twenty five students were inside an 8th grade science classroom when a chemical fire broke out. According to reports, the students in the classroom were hovering around a table where the teacher was conducting a science experiment when the incident unfolded.

When the teacher combined two separate chemicals, a fire ball formed. The fire was quickly extinguished with a fire extinguisher that was located inside the classroom, but not before five students received varying degrees of burn injuries. Two other students suffered from smoke inhalation as a result of the chemical fire.

Two students that were burned in the fire were transported via helicopter to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Officials who are investigating the classroom fire are still uncertain as to which chemicals caused the hazardous flames. The students returned to the middle school this morning, and counselors were on hand to make sure that they went about their daily routine as easily as possible.

Glass shards prompt recall of generic Lipitor

Posted on November 28th, 2012 No Comments

Small shards of glass in generic Lipitor tablets, known as atorvastatin, prompted the pharmacy firm Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals to recall the drug last week. The recall only affects retail sales by preventing pharmacies from dispensing the drug but not consumers who may already have the prescription.

According to WebMD, the recall includes batches of 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg dosages. Ranbaxy says it has not received any reports of injuries from the glass particles measuring less than one millimeter in size. Both Ranbaxy and the Food & Drug Administration have reportedly determined that there are no safety concerns for patients already taking the atorvastatin they already have.

Some CVS Pharmacies will allow customers, upon request, to exchange their refill of atorvastatin with an alternative brand. However, Consumer Reports is urging all consumers taking atorvastatin to return the potentially contaminated prescription to their pharmacies and request a different brand.

If you or someone you love has been injured by a recalled pharmaceutical, you have the right to file a lawsuit against the drug manufacturer to obtain the compensation you deserve for your pain and suffering. An experienced pharmaceutical liability attorney at the Sampson Law Firm can help you through this difficult time to ensure you receive justice.

Semi-Truck Accident Kills 1 in Kentucky

Posted on November 27th, 2012 No Comments

On Illinois Route 1, a 25-year-old Fredonia, Kentucky man lost his life after his motor vehicle collided with a semi-truck on November 21. The man was driving his vehicle on the northbound side of the highway when the accident took place.

According to police reports, the man’s vehicle abruptly crossed over the median and ventured into southbound traffic around 8:30 a.m. that morning. The car then made head-on contact with a southbound semi-truck. The semi-truck was being driven by a 50-year-old Illinois man. The impact of the semi-truck accident caused the driver of the passenger vehicle to lose his life at the scene.

Several different authorities were on-site to assess the damage of the accident, and to investigate the potential causes for the fatal collision. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured in the accident. Police are still looking into the crash, and at this time the cause of the truck accident has not been determined.

Truck accidents are oftentimes fatal due to the immense size of these commercial vehicles. Semi-trucks tend to overpower other vehicles on the road, therefore an accident involving a passenger car and a semi-truck would more than likely favor the semi-truck in regards to damages and injuries. It is important to stay alert when you are driving near a large commercial truck in order to avoid serious injuries.

Dentist facing multiple medical malpractice lawsuits

Posted on November 14th, 2012 No Comments

A dentist in Chesapeake, Virginia is facing multiple medical malpractice lawsuits worth millions of dollars after he performed questionable dental work on several patients. Patients as well as employees are upset with the dentist after he issued bad paychecks, MyFox8 reports.

According to records from the Virginia Board of Dentistry, the dentist has a record of complaints dating back to 1998. One patient claims he left a drill inside a tooth when he performed a root canal and did not inform the patient. A woman says dental implants the dentist installed has left her with permanent injuries and disfigurements. In one case, he drilled too deep into a patient’s tooth and forced the victim to have a root canal.

Aside from medical mistakes, the Virginia dentist is also facing legal problems. The board found that the man charged a patient’s insurance for procedures he never performed, and several employees claim he owes them thousands of dollars in wages that were issued on bad checks. Earlier this year he was fined $20,000 and had his license suspended for 60 days.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of medical malpractice, you do not have to suffer alone. Pursuing legal action against the guilty party can not only bring them to justice, but it can also provide you with the financial compensation you deserve for your pain and suffering and medical expenses.

Police Investigate Motorcycle Collision

Posted on November 12th, 2012 No Comments

Kentucky State Police are currently investigating a motorcycle accident that occurred Sunday afternoon and left one person injured. While state troopers have not released very much information due to the ongoing investigation, they have released details that they are sure of.

The accident took place on U.S. 60 right at the Henderson/Union County Line when a motorcycle was involved in a one-vehicle collision. When the accident was first reported, a helicopter was flown to the scene in order to transport the man to the hospital for treatment.

The pilot was later waved off and the patient was transported by ambulance to Henderson Methodist Hospital. There has not been any word on the man’s condition after the collision, but it is thought that he is still recovering in the hospital at this time.

While motorcycles can be an exciting way to travel, a motorcyclist must be cautious while on the roadway because they are smaller vehicles that can easily dodge in and out of traffic making it more difficult to be seen by other motorists.

Also, if involved in a collision, a motorcyclist has far less protection than other vehicles because they do not have a steel wall around them. This is why it is important to have knowledgeable representation on your side if you have been injured in a motorcycle collision. Contact the Louisville motorcycle accident lawyers of the Sampson Law Firm today in order to discuss your legal options.

Medicare website nursing home ratings called into question

Posted on November 9th, 2012 No Comments

The rating system on Medicare’s nursing home search website has been called into question after nursing homes that received high ratings have been fined for nursing home malpractice.

An investigation of North Carolina nursing homes found that some of the homes that have good ratings on the website have been fined for abusing residents in the past. A nursing home’s rating does not suffer if it makes an effort to correct any issues that arise.

nursing home abuse lawyerNursing homes can be fined vast sums of money if found violating their obligations to provide sufficient care to residents, but can have the fines reduced if they promise not to appeal the allegations against them. While these fines can be substantial, nursing homes found mistreating their residents can continue to receive funding from Medicare. Reports of abusive nursing homes are difficult to find and may not be published on Medicare’s website for months after such abuse occurs. This means unsuspecting elders may move into the home without the information they need.

To avoid moving your elderly loved ones into an abusive environment, there is no substitute for actually visiting a nursing home ahead of time. Visiting the home can give you an impression of how the residents feel about their living arrangements that a rating on a website simply cannot accomplish. You can talk to residents about how happy they are and learn more about whether or not the staff is attentive enough.

If you suspect your elderly relative is being abused in his or her nursing home, contact the nursing home abuse lawyers of the Sampson Law Firm to learn more about how to file a claim and the kinds of compensation that may be available to you and your loved one.
