13,000 ceramic heaters recalled for fire hazard

Posted on July 21st, 2011 No Comments

The CPSC recently issued a recall of 13,000 Touch Point Oscillating Ceramic Heaters that were sold in Meijer stores throughout the country, including those in Kentucky, from November 2010 to April 2011 because they pose a fire hazard. The heaters were also sold at dollar stores and flea markets.

The heaters’ oscillating mechanism has been found to short out, which could potentially cause fires. There were two reports of fires caused by the heaters prior to the recall, however, no one was injured in the fires.

Anyone who owns the heater has been advised to return it to any Meijer store for a full refund.

Posted on July 18th, 2011 No Comments

A man recently filed a lawsuit against doctors and nurses at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital on behalf of his wife who died after undergoing a botched C-section at the hospital.

The woman was admitted into the hospital in March 2009 to give birth to the couple’s son. A doctor performed a Cesarean section on the woman, however, he accidentally cut her bowel before suturing her abdomen. In the days following the C-section, the woman suffered abdominal pain and nausea and was unable to have a bowel movement. The woman was diagnosed with intra-abdominal sepsis and acute renal failure, and she died just five days after giving birth.

Toyota issues recall of Highlander Hybrid and Lexus cars

Posted on July 5th, 2011 No Comments

Toyota recently issued a recall of Highlander Hybrid and Lexus cars that were manufactured from 2005 through 2006.

The cars were recalled because of a defect in the vehicle’s inverter module. According to officials at Toyota, the vehicle has a chance of suddenly entering into a fail-safe/limp-home mode that would disable the vehicle from being able to be driven. The vehicle could then stop unexpectedly, posing the risk of a crash.

There have been no injuries or accidents caused by this defect reported. Toyota has said that they will be notifying drivers who own the cars of the recall by mail.

Kentucky receives grant to screen potential nursing home employees

Posted on June 29th, 2011 No Comments

The state of Kentucky was recently given a $3 million federal grant to establish a system to more thoroughly screen potential nursing home employees. Officials are hoping that this will prevent nursing home abuse and neglect by hiring people who are better qualified to take care of the elderly and disabled.

The grant will allow officials from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to purchase equipment that will conduct background checks using the fingerprints of people looking to be hired. The scan of the fingerprint will then go to both state and FBI background checks in order to see if a potential hire has a criminal background.

The equipment will be used in nursing homes across the state, as well as in Alzheimer’s facilities, family care homes, hospices, and assisted living facilities.
