Dozens of retired NFL players have come forward with lawsuits against the league, accusing the NFL of failing to protect its players from brain injuries.
Fulton Kuykendall, Jamal Lewis, Ryan Stewart, and Dorsey Levens are the latest athletes to sue the NFL. They claim that, even after retirement, they suffer health problems from injuries they sustained while on the field. Permanent brain damage has lead the men to suffer from sleeplessness, memory loss, dementia, and severe headaches. One player states that he often feels tingling sensations in his hands and arms.
Scientific studies conducted by Boston University on deceased football player’s brains show advanced stages of a dementia-like brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is caused by repeated concussions and/or sub-concussive head injuries. Signs of CTE were also found in an 18 year-old athlete’s brain.
