Police officers in Hopkinsville are currently investigating an accident that occurred on Friday between an 18-wheeler and horse and buggy and resulted in the death of a 3-year-old Amish girl.
The little girl, along with her mother, father, and older sister, were riding in their horse and buggy on Highway 41-A when a 52-year-old man driving an 18-wheeler rear-ended the horse and buggy. The man had just left a Wal-Mart distribution center and had taken his eyes off the road when he hit the family.
The 3-year-old girl died at the scene of the accident while her family was taken to Vanderbilt Hospital in Tennessee to be treated for serious injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler failed field sobriety tests and was found to have a drug in his system at the time of the accident. He has been charged with first-degree murder, driving under the influence, and three counts of assault.
Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victims of this tragic accident.
